The Santi family has sweet memories of their girls taking the Wise Men on this journey each Advent season, beginning almost 30 years ago. Their children used their imaginations and took turns deciding where to place the Wise Men next in their home, until finally joining Jesus at the nativity on Christmas morning. They loved that this tradition is both child-led and Jesus-focused, as each morning the children anticipated Jesus’ birth while taking part in the journey of the Wise Men.

The Manger Mission: A Family Christmas Tradition is a nativity set along with a story told through the eyes of playful, reminiscing Wise Men. The Wise Men, now part of a family’s nativity set, anticipate Christmas each year while reflecting on their first journey to meet Jesus.

Rooted in play-based learning, this tradition caters to where children are developmentally while inviting them into creative play as they place the Wise Men each day, teaching them the story of their journey to Jesus through hands-on interaction.

Each morning leading up to Christmas, the children take the Wise Men on an adventure in their home as they journey closer to the nativity where they can once again see baby Jesus. On Christmas morning, the children place the Wise Men at the nativity as part of their family’s Christmas morning tradition.

This tradition may start with the beginning of Advent or any time prior to Christmas. Children can move the Wise Men every morning or once a week, allowing your family to take an approach that works best for your schedule.

We hope that sharing The Manger Mission will bless your family as you join with your children in joyful, playful anticipation of the true meaning of Christmas morning, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
